The document that I propose to critique is a document from the student handout issued from Bridgewater State University of Bridgewater Massachusetts. The document is titled "Civil Rights, Disabilities, and Discrimination Policy." Its opening statement is "Policy Detailing BSU's regulations regarding fair and equal treatment for individuals with documented disabilities." Upon reading the document I found it not to be very informative to the "layperson" that a student handbook would target. Rather, this document seems to be a meant to shield the university from legal liability, which is necessary in out state of perpetual bureaucracy and litigation. Overall I believe it's intention in being included in the student handbook is to give some reassurance to potential students with disabilities that fear discrimination.
When I first read this document what I found most interesting is that the school would include so much hard to read legal jargon. I felt that the target audience of the "Student Handbook" would never read this policy. I was surprised at how unreadable the first page was with its long paragraphs. At the end though it gives you the information to file a complaint against the school so possibly its poor readability is by design. Although after consideration I feel that the target of this document is the minority of students who will read and re-read this and provides much information to them.
